Evolutionary breakthroughs (erflies)? Help?

Cabbage erfly caterpillars can feed on mustard plants, and monarch erfly caterpillars can feed on milkweed plants. Why are these considered "evolutionary breakthroughs"? What are the implications for such breakthroughs in terms of natural selection and competition? Please help, thank you.
