Is it a bad idea to wear flea collars?

My roommate's cats brought in fleas. I think I'm allergic because the bites swell up quite a bit and the pain is intolerable. My room is a huge mess so as I clean, my feet and legs get bombarded! I need some temporary relief while I clean. Avon's Skin So Soft hasn't worked. Would it be wise/safe to wear flea collars around my ankles?
