Carbon monoxide....Killer? I DON THINK ITS POSSIBLE!!!!?

I have heard that carbon monoxide is fatal to human life when it is accidentally or intentionally activited by car exhaust in an enclosed garage but how is it possible to die when they have catalytic converters nowadays??? ( uming their cars were new ones)
