How do i make the old cat and new kitten tolerate eachother?

our old cat is 10yrs old and weve recently just got a new kitten which is 6 weeks old. and all hell breaks loose whn they are within two meters within each other. how do i deal with this its really disturbing. i have to spend time with them in different rooms at different times!!. help!!!
